Harambee uses generic transportation whenever possible to reinforce inclusion. If a participant is not able to safely use generic transportation, staff may drive consumers to activities. HCS has a vehicle to provide transportation to social and recreational activities in the community, as well as, other appointments.
Safety First
Through its maintenance program (e.g. following the manufacture’s schedule), HCS ensures that the vehicle is maintained in a safe operating condition. The safety program includes having an emergency kit and vehicle tool kit available in the center vehicle. Random checks are completed to ensure that the kits are intact and the vehicle is maintained in good working condition.
In addition, staff is trained on the proper reporting of any concern or maintenance problem with the vehicle, which transports the maximum number of individuals approved for the model. Each seat must have operational seat belts.
Transportation Dispatcher
The Dispatcher is responsible for overseeing the transportation program for the program (including ensuring the license and registration are current and the vehicle is in good operating condition).
Drivers
All staff who drive consumers must be at least 25 years of age, have a clean driving report from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), evidence of car insurance, valid registration and California Driver’s License. At hire they must submit to a drug screen, be able to lift 75 pounds and agree to participate in DMV’s Pull Notice Program.
Alternate Transportation Arrangements
Each of the participating consumers procure a Regional Transit Card
